Gentle Care for Sensitive Teeth

If you suffer from sensitive teeth, the caring professionals at Maple Dental Office and Mapleview Dental Centre will find a personalized solution for you. Many patients develop a common condition called dentin hypersensitivity, which may involve a sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet, sour, brushing or flossing. Dentin is a layer of your tooth under the hard enamel surface that has nerve endings that can be responsive to temperature, acidic foods, touch and other factors.

Changing Brushing Habits Can Lead to More Problems
We find that patients often describe the sensitivity as sharp pain in one or multiple teeth that is known to leave as quickly as it came. The pain can be enough for you to think about making changes to the food and drinks you select and how you brush your teeth. Dietary changes might be advisable but changing your brushing habits may lead to more problems.

Dentin hypersensitivity is extremely common and most often treatable. We can reduce your sensitivity by treating any underlying dental problems and by using specialized toothpastes and treatments. We advise that you maintain your regular brushing regimen while using a soft bristle brush. You should brush at a 45-degree angle and in a circular motion, not back and forth. When eating foods that soften enamel, you should wait a while before brushing. You may want to reduce your intake of highly acidic food and rinse with water after eating them.

If you are suffering from sensitive teeth, we can help. Schedule your consultation today.

Dentin may be exposed or react to certain stimuli for the following reasons:

  • Brushing too hard
  • Receding gums have exposed dentin
  • Tooth grinding
  • Acidic food
  • Stomach acid
